Lists vs segments

Know when to use a static list and when to use a self-updating segment.

You curate a list; a segment curates itself.

A list and a segment side by side with their member counts

1
Use a list when you want a static group you control: contacts stay until you add or remove them. Lists are your broadcast audiences and automation triggers.
2
Use a segment when you want a rule-based group that updates itself: contacts flow in and out automatically as they match or stop matching the rules.
3
Pick based on the job: a curated "VIP" group is a list; "everyone in Ontario with the new-customer tag" is a segment.

Tips and good to know

Segments also appear in automations: the "Matches a segment" trigger and the enrollment eligibility setting both use them.

Both lists and segments are scoped by brand and location.
