Broadcasts vs Automations: which to use

Choose between a one-time send and an ongoing triggered journey.

One-time vs ongoing: the only distinction that matters.

The Broadcasts and Automations tabs side by side

1
Use a Broadcast for a one-time email to a list: a new-arrival announcement, a store update, this month's newsletter. You pick the moment; it sends once.
2
Use an Automation for an ongoing journey: a contact enters when a trigger condition is met and moves through a series of steps. A welcome series, a re-engagement sequence, a birthday email.
3
When in doubt, ask: "does this send once to everyone, or should it happen automatically to each person when something occurs?" Once = broadcast. Automatically per person = automation.

Tips and good to know

The two share your building blocks: templates from the Email Builder and copy from the Email Copy generator work in both.

An "enrollment" is a contact entering and moving through an automation; broadcasts have no enrollment, just a send.
