Build an automation from scratch
Build a custom email journey on a blank canvas: pick a trigger, add steps, and activate.
Every journey starts with a trigger.

Before you start
Use a tablet or desktop (about 768px and up). Sketch your journey first: what starts it, what emails go out, what waits sit between them.
1
Open Marketing, then Automations, and choose start from scratch.
2
Pick your trigger, the condition that enrolls a contact (see "Automation triggers explained" for all 13).

Tips and good to know
lightbulb
Keep journey one simple: trigger, email, wait, email. You can add branches and splits once the basics run.
lightbulb
Creating and editing automations is an Admin capability. Location Managers can view automations and their enrollments.
lightbulb
Timing inside automations is phrased plainly ("shortly," "within a few minutes"), so do not look for cron-style settings.
lightbulb
Draft enrolls no one, which makes it safe to build slowly.
